Poem: A Sassy Stroll with the Joneses: audiobook: trying to live high on the hog

A Sassy Stroll with the Joneses by Ruben White

They parade through the streets, heads high like the sun,

Draped in borrowed grandeur, pretending they’ve won,

With pockets like shadows, and dreams made of dust,

Chasing the Joneses, but is that really just?

They tell more lies than planters got peanuts.

In their polished façades, they strut with disdain,

But beneath the bravado lies a tremor of pain,

They wear their conceit like a coat made of pride,

Yet the truth, oh the truth, is a tempest inside.

They tell more lies than planters got peanuts.

“See my life!” they proclaim, as if it’s a show,

While counting their coins, wondering where to go,

Confused by the laughter that dances in air,

They miss the sweet freedom that’s found in the bare.

They tell more lies than planters got peanuts.

Sipping on fantasies brewed in the fire,

They cling to illusions, their hearts filled with desire,

For every grand tale that they spin in the night,

There’s a whisper of wisdom that beckons the light.

They tell more lies than planters got peanuts.

So here’s to the dreamers, the seekers of truth,

May they find solace in the strength of their youth,

For life is not measured by what one can show,

But in the love that we give, and the seeds that we sow.

They tell more lies than planters got peanuts.
