Dear: Journal,

My Journey of Healing and Transformation

Acknowledging My Pain

As I look back on my life, I realize that acknowledging the pain I endured was the first step toward healing. I faced inappropriate behavior in elementary school from 4 male administrators. Told that that I would not be believed, It was my fault, or someone would come up missing. I was scared and frighten as a child at the ages of 9-12 years old. I was depressed, misunderstood, I had anxiety and developed a symptom known as Trichotillomania (a noticeable urge to pull hair. Reminding myself that this was a trying time for all children in Atlanta. Because of the Missing an murdered children. My little friend Luby Geter was caught in the cross hairs and came up missing and didn’t survive. I know he’s in heaven now. But, the challenges I encountered later, it felt overwhelming at times. But I learned that my feelings were valid, and it was okay to confront my pain. Writing in my journal and talking to trusted friends helped me articulate my emotions, allowing me to process what I had experienced.

Finding Strength in Creativity

Through it all, I discovered that my passions—writing, singing, and playing the saxophone—became my lifelines. These creative outlets allowed me to express myself and channel my experiences into something beautiful. They provided a release, helping me transform my pain into purpose and giving me the strength to keep moving forward. Today, I am proud to perform with the Georgia Mass Choir, where I can share my love for music and uplift others through song.

The Power of Community

Connecting with others who shared similar experiences was crucial for my healing. I found solace in community, where understanding and support flourished. Sharing my story not only inspired others but also reminded me that I was not alone in my struggles. Together, we created a sense of belonging that was so vital to my journey.

Reclaiming My Identity

Navigating changes in my identity was challenging, especially when I felt the need to reinvent myself. I learned that embracing change could be a powerful catalyst for growth. I began to see my new identity as part of my journey, a step toward healing and self-discovery. Reframing my narrative helped me focus on the lessons learned and the strength I gained from my experiences. My journey wasn't just about the pain; it was about how I rose above it.

Moving Forward with Purpose

Setting goals for my healing became essential. I started with small, achievable steps related to my mental and emotional well-being. Whether it was attending therapy, engaging in creative activities, or practicing self-care, each step brought me closer to a healthier version of myself.

Professional Achievements

At the age of 22, I became the youngest assistant manager at Home Depot, a role that taught me invaluable leadership skills and resilience. My professional journey took another significant turn when I filed a case against Ford Motors (Ruben Camp vs. Ford Motors), which ultimately landed my story in the Civil Rights Movement section at the Atlanta History Center. Changing legal history from Zero Tolerance in the workplace to Diversity Equity and Inclusion.

In 2009, I reunionized Goodyear rubber and tire company with the help of the United steel worker union.  further enriching my career experiences. However, my journey was not without its challenges; in 201 6, I became a patient at Emory Wesley Woods, where I learned more about the importance of mental health and support systems.

In 2018, I took a proactive step toward healing and community engagement by proposing the development of the Emory Winship Cancer Institute's art and health program. This initiative aimed to integrate the arts into patient care, promoting healing through creativity.

Advocating for Change

Advocating for change became another powerful aspect of my journey. I realized that sharing my story could inspire others and raise awareness about mental health.

As a best-selling author, I strive to use my words to uplift and educate. I am also an advocate for mental health awareness through NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness), where I work to break the stigma surrounding mental health issues. Additionally, I serve as a member at large with the NAACP, fighting for civil rights and equality in our communities.

The Essence of Healing

Understanding my emotions was a vital part of my healing process. I learned that healing is a journey of accepting and navigating my feelings. Mindfulness practices, meditation, and expressive arts helped me find peace amid the chaos.

I also came to embrace my sensitivity as a gift rather than a burden. This gift allowed

me to connect deeply with others and enriched my life with empathy and creativity. I learned that my experiences could serve as a source of strength, not just for me but for those around me.

Soaring to Excellence

As I reflect on my journey, I realize that healing is not linear; it's a continuous process. By embracing my experiences, advocating for change, and nurturing my passions, I have found my path to peace and fulfillment.

My Next Step

So, what will be my next step toward healing? I continue to reflect on what resonates with me. Whether it's pursuing a new creative project, connecting with a supportive community, or seeking professional guidance, I am committed to taking that step today. My journey is ongoing, and I am ex

cited about the endless possibilities that lie ahead.
